Fourth Generation: 2018-Current Model
Why you need to check out the fourth-generation used Ford Expedition: Compared to the previous generation, these used Ford Expedition SUVs offer more in refinement, passenger space, and high-tech features. At the outset, three trim models were available: the XLT, Limited, Platinum. Each trim does an excellent job of balancing modern comfort with sporty utility.
Since every trim model initially offers optional four-wheel drive, you should have no problem finding this off-road-ready performance gear on a used Expedition. All of these SUVs feature the same engine, a 375-horsepower turbocharged V6 that’s ready for your next adventure. Depending on equipment, these used Expeditions can tow up to 9,000 pounds.
How have these models changed from model year to model year? The 2020 Expedition comes in more shapes and sizes, introducing a King Ranch trim model that’s available both in regular and (extended-length) Max body styles. The King Ranch is a luxury Expedition that slots between the Limited and Platinum trim models. You’ll love its Western ranch theme, which includes saddle brown leather upholstery and unique badging.
The 2020 Expedition was also the first to roll out the Ford Co-Pilot360 package. The package is standard for all trim levels and includes potential lifesavers, like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.
Third Generation: 2007-2017
What drivers love about the third-generation used Ford Expedition: These full-size SUVs are big enough for a family of eight. They’re also incredibly tow-worthy, giving you the ability to transport big toys – like four-wheelers, a pack of Jet Skis, a big camper, or a huge boat. With optional four-wheel drive, these used Expeditions also treat you to a rollicking ride down your favorite trail.
How do these used Ford Expedition SUVs differ from year to year? Since this generation spans a decade, you can expect to see a lot of changes as the Expedition evolved to keep up in a competitive segment. As this generation of used Ford Expedition SUVs wore on, everything from infotainment technology to towing features found room to improve.
The 2009 Expedition was the first to include voice-activated Sync multimedia controls, giving drivers hands-free access to infotainment options. The 2010 model added trailer sway control, performance technology that enhances safety when you’re transporting a heavy trailer. For 2011, Ford introduced a new base XL trim, which came standard with seating for five (you needed to upgrade to the midgrade XLT for three rows of seating). By 2013, though, the XL was discontinued.
The 2013 Expedition might’ve eliminated the base XL model, but it added an optional integrated trailer brake controller for greater control over towing performance. The following year, Ford also offered a new load-leveling rear suspension system to even out the ride.
For 2015, the Expedition saw some big changes, including a new engine, new suspension options, improved cabin materials, and a redesigned exterior. This new engine, a 3.5-liter V6, offers heroic performance, with 365 horses and 420 pound-feet of torque.
Finally, in 2016, Ford rolled out its Sync 3 infotainment system. It replaced the MyFord Touch interface, and improved usability with a responsive 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
